R’n’B singer/songwriter Jorja Smith has been announced as the winnder of the BRIT’s Critics’ Choice Award for this year, beating other hopefuls such as Steffln Don and Mabel.

The artist took to Instagram to celebrate her win, stating: ‘Woke up speechless!!! Can’t believe I am the Brits Critics’ Choice for 2018, this is such an honour and a dream. Grew up watching the Brits mesmerised with hope that one day I could go. So crazy that I’m the First ever independent artist to be nominated and win. Also To be part of an all female shortlist with @mabelmcvey & @stefflondon who have both had incredible 2017s makes me so happy , we all shine ♥️ HUGE thank you to my Team who have worked so hard this year and to all who support & believe in me. 2018 will be unforgettable’.

The Critics’ Choice Award, previously won by the likes of Adele, Emele Sandé, and Sam Smith, recognises “the future stars of British recording talent”. Last year it was Rag’n’Bone Man who took home the title.

Smith has risen to fame after a number of critically successful singles and EPs, including her 2016 Project 11, (of which you can find our review of here). She also appeared on Drake’s hugely-popular More Life, which opened her music to American audiences.

The Critics’ Choice Award is the first accolade to be unveiled before 2018’s BRIT Awards Ceremony, which will take place on February 21st at London’s O2 Arena.
