BBC Music Unveil ‘Spot On’ Sound Of 2018 Longlist

Written by Rahoul Naik

BBC Music’s ‘Sound of…’ list has been going for a long time now and year after year, the majority of their predictions for artists who are going to blow up and be on all of our favourite Spotify playlists has been incredibly accurate, making this year’s list even more important in a music industry full of new flavours and sounds.

The list was voted on by 173 individual panelists including Stormzy, Ray BLK and Ellie Goulding as well as music executives from a variety of places, all who know a thing or two about good new music.

The list has in the past predicted some stand-out artists from Stormzy to Adele and even Rag’n’Bone Man. This year, the longlist is as follows:

  • ALMA
  • Billie Eilish
  • Jade Bird
  • Khalid
  • Lewis Capaldi
  • Nilüfer Yanya
  • Not3s
  • Pale Waves
  • Rex Orange County
  • Sam Fender
  • Sigrid
  • Superorganism
  • Tom Walker
  • Yaeji
  • Yxng Bane

The class of 2018 is one of the youngest line ups ever nominated, with American singer songwriter Billie Eilish becoming the competition’s youngest ever nominee at just 15 years old. There is also a strong representation from Manchester with 3 artists, including urban jazz performer IAMDDB, indie pop band Pale Waves and singer songwriter Tom Walker making up the top 16.

Chris Price, Head of Music for Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra, says: “The BBC Music Sound of 2018 longlist is impressive for its strength and diversity. The stellar list of new acts here, many of whom have seen significant early support from Radio 1 and 1Xtra, fill me with confidence that 2018 will be an exciting year for emerging talent.

We’re happy to see so many of our favourite artists flying up the list from Yaeji to Nliufer Yanya as well as IAMDDB, Not3s and Yxng Bane holding down the fort for their increasingly popular styles of urban music.

If this list is anything to go by, the future is bright for music around the world, but UK music in particular across all genres is really seeing an uplift in exposure and love which has even led to the likes of Stormzy playing out in the Far East.

Keep your eyes peeled for our top picks for 2018 next month to see who we tip for success in the coming year.
