If it’s music for the soul you are searching for, then look no further. Musical genius and multi-talented 23-year-old Chris McClenney is the next rising musician, producer and instrumentalist taking a fresh approach in blending R&B, soul and electronic music.
We wrote about McClenney’s first full length effort, Portrait In Two at the start of the year and he is now back with a new single in the form of I Ain’t.
McClenney was first discovered in 2014 by Soulection, a radio show notorious for its chilled and laidback R&B tunes, and has since released his EP for their White Label Series in 2015. Last year, he even secured credit as a producer on Atlanta’s newcomer D.R.A.M.’s breakthrough album Big Baby D.R.A.M. The hustle doesn’t end here though, as he demonstrated his talent through his 10-track EP Portrait In Two which dropped earlier this year.
Closing out a year that saw a co-writing credits on Khalid’s smash Location, production credits for Thatshymn, D.R.A.M, H.E.R, Sango, and Elujay, and a residency at NYC’s legendary Blue Note Jazz Club, a new single is just what we needed.
A continuation of his now established sound that fuses Soul, R&B, Bass, Jazz, Electronic, and Hip-Hop elements, I Ain’t again features McClenney’s top-line that alternates between smooth vocals and a rhythmic Hip-Hop vocal delivery. The single also features a myriad of organic instrumentation including drums, piano, and guitar. Another ballad to add to McClenney’s constantly expanding discography, I Ain’t is the ideal laid-back groove to close out the year.
In addition, to his solo work and many collaborations this year, he also was invited by Spotify to do a rendition of Childish Gambino’s Redbone as one of their “Spotify Singles” that has clocked in over a million plays. He also could be caught live alongside singer-songwriter Bibi Bourelly as part of Red Bull Sound Select tour.
Up next for McClenney, he is gearing up for the release of a soon-to-be announce EP out in early 2018.
