XL Recordings boss, Richard Russell has released a slew of songs over this year that has included the likes of Kamasi Washington, Ibeyi, Giggs, Wiki and many more. His latest offering comes in the form of the dreamy collaboration that is Sampha and Syd and their single Show Love. The tracks are dropped via Everything Is Recorded which is Russell’s stage name as such.
The song itself is very much somewhere between soul and up-beat alt-R&B. The heavy drum percussion helps to drive the tracks forward whilst the keys (played by Sampha no doubt) really help to add a more ambient feel to the single that is well suited to Syd’s vocals. The collaboration is one many fans would have dreamt of and we can now confirm that it is just as beauty in reality.
This isn’t the first time Sampha has featured on a song put together by Russell, he was also on the track Mountains Of Gold with Jazz maestro Kamasi Washington, rising stars Ibeyi and Rap newcomer, Wiki.
Both Sampha and Syd have already has busy years, with the former winning this year’s Mercury Prize for his album Process and the latter coming off the great success of her debut solo album, Fin, and more recent EP, Always Never Home.
The video for the single is also pretty cool with lyrics written over tape throughout one of Russell’s studios being the focal part, both pointing to the musicality of the song and the artists.
It is unclear where Russell will take his Everything Is Recorded project next but with already such a mix bag of artists bringing their own style and swag to vibes that range from Jazz to Soul to R&B, it is anyone’s guess as to who will feature next.
Whilst we wait eagerly for the next offering, listen to Show Love below:
