Atlanta rapper Rich the Kid links up with Kendrick Lamar for a track with a surprisingly good end product. This pairing may seem unusual given the conscious hip-hop that the latter artist has pioneered compared to the dark and spacey trap rap that Rich the Kid is known for. But after a dramatic stylistic change on his massively critical and commercial successful fourth album DAMN and killer features on tracks by the likes of Future and Travis Scott, this song continues to show K.dot’s versatility and competence at incorporating more contemporary traits into his style.
The beat is remarkably effective considering how simple it is. A playful piano line makes up the main melody with a fairly standard trap beat providing the groove of the song. This compliments both rapper’s flows, with Rich the Kid matching the subtle bounce of the beat while injecting enough hype in his delivery to make it engaging. As Lamar takes the second verse, it sounds like he’s having fun riding the beat and the constant changing of his cadence adds a lot of character to the track.
Having signed to Interscope Records earlier this year, this may be the lead-off single for a debut commercial album from Rich the Kid after releasing a slew of mixtapes in the past couple of years, but nothing has been confirmed.
