A$AP Ferg Makes A Strong Comeback On ‘Still Striving’

Written by Samee Anibaba

Everybody dust off your durags, the Trap Lord has returned. After following A$AP Rocky’s steps A$AP Ferg has proven himself to be a consistent rapper, dropping banger after banger and on Still Striving, he cements his reputation with a strong comeback from his last album.

This mixtape comes in the middle of a big year for A$AP Mob; signing Playboi Carti and dropping his debut album as well as releasing the long awaited A$AP Twelvyy album, both proven successes. But Ferg is an established artist with nothing to prove; instead he takes his sound to the next level with a mixtape that provides hit after hit.

Opening with Trap and A Dream, Ferg opens the mixtape with a strong high energy start with no other than MMG’s Meek Mill featured with a very fierce verse. This track sets off the tape with an opening statement proving Ferg can keep up with the bars while still sticking to the trap sound.

Ferg brings a lot of good features on the album – from old school legends like Cam’ron and Snoop Dogg to hard up and comers like Famous Dex and Playboi Carti. Each feature brings something unique to the table over the hard beats, with even lyrical rappers like Dave East going in over the hard trap beats.  Even Lil Yachty (someone whose music can go from catchy to straight up stupid over one mixtape) drops a great verse on Aww Yeah.

The Migos featured track Nasty (Who Dat) is a standout tune, with everyone going in and each rappers flow (and adlibs) keeping the tune off the wall and exciting.

But Ferg is more diverse than a few trap bangers. The last two tracks, Nandos (shouts out Nandos still) and Tango are mellow rap tunes with chilling beats that Ferg rides incredibly well. While Nandos is about riding on your enemies, Tango is a softer moment where Ferg discusses his father’s passing, the loss of crew founder A$AP Yams and other dark, personal thoughts. It’s a great song that shouldn’t be forgotten in all the hype.

Overall, Still Striving is exactly what it says on the cover, A$AP Ferg keeps doing what he’s already been doing so well, and even doing it better, keeping the torch going for A$AP Mob’s crazy 2017. This is not a mixtape to miss this year.

You can find the mixtape on all streaming services.
