Premiering on Zane Lowe’s beats 1 program on Thursday, Ibeyi have returned with the joyous and intimate Away Away. It comes as the second release this year, after Lost In My Mind, which was the first single since their self-titled debut album in 2015.
In the track, the Cuban-French duo of Naomi and Lisa Kiandé Díaz harmonise on the fleeting nature of time, all the while supported by a simply layered choral melody, and a minimalist percussive beat, influenced by the sound of contemporary diaspora. The video, directed by Christian Beuchet, shows the sisters joyously singing, dancing, and moving around a city together, displaying an incredibly infectious sense of camaraderie.
Ibeyi are gifted at being able to infuse their own take on electronic soul with the vibrancy of their Cuban heritage, and Away Away is no different, showcasing the talented songcrafting the sisters put into their work.
