UK ‘new age sound system’ duo, Star. One have dropped their latest single, Okay, featuring Maleek Berry & Seyi Shay. Okay is the duo’s debut single on 3Beat, the label that is home to Sigma, High Contrast, Style G and many more.
Brothers Joe and Adam describe themselves as a ‘new age sound system’, whereby the music they make, and the parties they throw, blur the lines between UK garage, grime and bass music, while taking influences from the past 50 years of British black music. Okay, is a great example of this, merging old school UK garage production with the Nigerian stylings of Afrobeat stars Maleek Berry and Seyi Shay.
When asked about the inspiration and aspiration for the track, Phaze said that “the main inspiration for the track was summer. We just wanted to create a summer banger, we’ve made some garage beats and loops but we wanted to make it sound brighter and happier with an afro flavour. We also sit on the line between underground and commercial, there’s a crossover and we wanted to make something that had widespread appeal but still stayed true to us.”
“We’ve been sitting on this track for a while and it just feels like the right time to drop it. I’m out here in my shorts and the sun is bright so we just hope people play this track all summer and we can see where it goes from there.”
The duo started 2017 in style with their Blocks EP, which featured tracks showcasing a variety of styles like Grime, UKG and Jungle. Their breakout hit came in the shape of Original Badman with Takura and Assassin which received heavy radio play and support from Mistajam, DJ Target, Noisey, Huw Stephens, Phil Taggart and more.
Festival highlights for the duo this summer include Glastonbury, Parklife, Strawberries and Cream, Kendal Calling, Boardmasters, Boomtown, Rading & Leeds and Bestival.
