Last night, the biggest and hottest musicians and celebrities descended upon Las Vegas for this year’s Billboard Music Awards and it was a BIG night for Drake.
Drake won a total of 13 awards last night including Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artist, Top Rap Artist, and many more for his biggest hit, One Dance.
Drake broke the record that was previous held by a very different type of artist, Adele, when she released her 21 album and won many of the similar awards in the female category too.
Perhaps the shift in focus at this year’s Billboard Awards shows how pop music and popular culture is embracing Drake’s style of hip-hop and rap and we may have just witnessed a new path being made by Drake for underground artists with a similar sound to come up to the light of the mainstream.
The night overall featured stand-out performances from Bruno Mars, Cher and Celine Dion all who surpassed expectation and brought some serious vibes to the night and kept a very visibly happy Vanessa Hudgens smiling.
It was nice to the Young Money family up beside Drake when he accepted his final award show, describing Nicki Minaj as the ‘love of his life’ and Lil Wayne as ‘the man who made it all happen’. Drake’s dad even turned up in an all purple suit, swigging Virginia Black whiskey on stage; it was Drake’s party.
Check out Drake’s final speech below.
