Sløtface’s New Release ‘Magazine’ Is The Norwegian Feminist Punk You’ve Been Needing

Written by Jack Andrew Cribb

Been craving some Norwegian feminist punk? Then look no further, Sløtface got you covered.

Hailed as one of the best bands to look out for in 2017, for their heady mix of danceable, upbeat summer-punk, Sløtface have just released their new single Magazine, which comes as the first release of their upcoming debut album Try Not To Freak Out, set to come out on September 15th.

Sløtface are pretty well-known for their pop-punk-esque anthemic rock, which is half party, half politics. “Maybe sometimes it feels like you’re putting someone on the spot when you’re asking them to have real opinions, which seems like a weird way to approach music in general but for our sake our whole thing is trying to write pop music that’s catchy enough but it’s actually about something important,” explains vocalist Haley Shea.

“Like we’re tricking you into listening to this feminist anthem with like super-clear tendencies but you never realised it.”

Magazine is one of the more traditionally pop-punk pieces by the band, and it’s goddamn sick. With the catchy repeated hook ‘Patti Smith would never put up with this shit’, and an incredibly fun chorus melody, it sounds like the intro to a noughties teen film. Definitely a song you should be putting on your playlists.

Speaking on the track, Shea commented “It’s fuelled by the back and forth of knowing that society creates unrealistic expectations regarding what people “should” look like, and still feeling uncomfortable in your own skin because you don’t live up to those images.”

The band have just started a gargantuan European tour, the dates and venues of which you can check out here:
