Yesterday, Lin Manuel Miranda released The Hamilton Mixtape, which has remakes from the original soundtrack of Broadway show, Hamilton.
The Hip-Hop Musical tells the story of one of the founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton, who influenced America’s independence from Britain as well as the US Constitution. As an orphaned immigrant, Hamilton faces many challenges including, love, lost and jealously from others. The Broadway Musical has won many awards including one Grammy and an outstanding eleven TONY awards…pretty cool right?
The 23-track mixtape features ionic black musicians including: Alicia Keys, The Roots, Nas and Queen Latifah. It has a unique mixture of musical genres yet is mainly focused on the art of Hip Hop.
One of the stand-out songs is Dear Theodosia (Reprise) by Chance The Rapper and Francis and The Lights. Chance sings the role of Hamilton who meets his daughter for the first time and shares the love he has for his children, as well as the sacrifices he is willing to make for them. It’s heartfelt, something hip-hop can forget about these days.
The play, the album and the mixtape is truly inspiring and worth listening to (or watching, if you are lucky). It manages to captive audiences from different backgrounds and educates them of the birth of America, which ultimately changed the world. And they say history is boring.
