Pussy Riot Preach Female Empowerment With ‘Straight Outta Vagina’

Written by Jack Cribb

Russian punk rockers Pussy Riot have released a new track, Straight Outta Vagina which is as upbeat as it is political, doubling as both anti-Trump anthem, and a celebration of the power of female sexuality. Featuring on the track are rapping talent Desi Mo and Leikeli47, and well known producer and musician Dave Sitek, who has worked with bands such as Foals and Little Dragon.

The track is unapologetic, beginning with a somewhat old-fashioned recording that states “Some of you might become somewhat uncomfortable as part of this film unfold”. Pussy Riot have never been one to pull their punches, and in this statement they are directly calling out those who would disagree with their politics. Of course Pussy Riot have been making waves throughout the media in recent years, with the jailing of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina in 2012 for apparent ‘hooliganism’ (They threw a protest in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour), and Straight Outta Vagina only works to sure up their positions on feminism and misogyny.

The video itself is almost neo-religious, with Tolokonnikova dressed in the garb of a nun, mixed with the well-known brightly coloured balaclava that has become synonymous with all things Pussy Riot. The music is poppy, fun, almost too light and friendly for the kind of world this song is fighting against. And the chorus, damn, that chorus is the catchiest thing to come from the Russian rockers, “Don’t play stupid/ Don’t play dumb / Vagina’s where you’re really from”.

The song is ridiculously fun, satirical, and for all its humour and punchy basslines, becomes quite the powerful track once you read between the lines. Its message is expressed even more fluidly when the rap from Desi Mo and Leikeli47 comes in. It is incredibly refreshing to see rap that finally talks about female anatomy and sexuality in a way that doesn’t denigrate it to the position of male plaything, but argues for its strength, charisma, and importance.

Some people may think that Straight Outta Vagina is an answer to what has recently been taking the media by storm, the recent allegations against Donald Trump and his infamous and incredibly vulgar “Grab them by the pussy” recording, yet this would not be the case. Recorded in February of this year, making the song somewhat more prophetic than reactionary. Yet Pussy Riot do comment on this, making you fully aware that regardless of when the song was recorded, it is an answer to misogyny as a whole. The band write in the description of the video on YouTube “And the owner of vaginas is not some narcissistic stupid orange ape who’d claim that he could easily grab women by their pussies. The owner of vagina is a woman. Who wears her vag as a badge of honour.”

Amen to that, right?
